Tasked to create four postcards about any topic of my choice, however; we can only use three process inks and had to emulate the style of four artist of our choosing from a list provided by our instructor.
For my topic I chose to do the 20th anniversary of MF DOOM’s album MM.. FOOD. For my colors I just decided to do three shades of green to pay homage to the fictional character that MF DOOM takes inspiration from; Dr Doom. But to also pay homage to the iconic green hoodie DOOM has on in his MM.. FOOD original album cover. I did a light, dark, and mid-tone green to make it look like every postcard had a green tint.
Aesthetic Apparatus is one of the four I chose. I decided to go for a simpler approach which was based on their Jason Isabell and Father John Misty poster design. The design had an older aesthetic with the imagery used, the halftone texture, and the patterns which are all design choices I mimicked in my design.
Bill Cahan has a diverse portfolio including several mediums, but one of his projects which stood out to me was “Graphic twenty-five” which consisted of minimalistic illustrations. I liked this style and made my own illustrations for the track list of “MM.. FOOD” and arranged them in order.
I chose Matt Owens because I was really drawn into the early internet feel of his portfolio and work. His work consisted of basic shapes working with real images to create a feeling of a floating plane, while some of his other work felt much more digitally created projects. To capture the early internet aesthetic, I used filters to make everything look more pixelated. I wanted to make it feel like DOOM was about to grab the food, so I eyes his eyes and hand by making them larger and anatomically.
Elliot peter uses various mediums, some of which I simply cannot emulate, among the many mediums includes more traditional methods. Taking inspiration from his “Rei Kawakubo” print, I drew two images of DOOM: one of his very first mask, and the other of a much more recent photo of him. Using photoshop I created a composition similar to Elliot Peter Earls and had my design.
